The Archaeological Museum is housed on two floors of a beautiful 4-storey mansion in the center of Bilbao's historic
Casco Viejo. The museum's collection includes more than 2,000 items, most of which were found during excavations in the province of Biscay.
The first floor is dedicated to the period from the settlement of the Basque Country to the Middle Ages. It shows the history of the emergence and improvement of tools, household items, hunting and fishing accessories, and interior decorations. The “pearl” of the exposition is a partially restored prehistoric vessel, on which the ancient inhabitants of Biscay fished.
The second floor is provided for displaying exhibits from the Middle Ages to the modern period. Noteworthy is a significant collection of ceramics, including huge amphorae for storing olive oil.
