The area originated in the 19th century outside the city walls, when the need for spatial growth in Barcelona, which suffered from overpopulation and frequent epidemics, became apparent. Engineer Ildefons Serda is implementing his urbanization plan for the city. It is the Cerda plan that becomes the ideal playground for the architects of Barcelona.
