In 1401, six of the city's hospitals were merged to form the Hospital of the Holy Cross. The famous Catalan architect Luis Domé nique y Montaner took up the reconstruction of the complex to meet the needs of the city. According to his project, the city wall was demolished, and the territory of the hospital occupied nine adjacent residential blocks. As an architect, Domenech y Montaner saw as his task the maximum contribution to the speedy recovery of patients, and everything in the hospital was aimed at this.→
