Colossi of Memnon

el-Colossat, es-Salamat, Colossi of Memnon, Les Colosses de Memnon
Egypt, Luxor
The Colossi of Memnon are two huge stone statues of the pharaoh of Ancient Egypt Amenhotep III. The statues are made of quartzite sandstone, each of them reaches 18 meters in height and weighs about 700 tons. The Colossi of Memnon are guards at the entrance to the Funeral Temple of Amenhotep, at that time the largest in Egypt. Currently, the temple of Amenhotep is almost completely destroyed, with the exception of the Colossi.

It was exciting for me to come into contact with these antiquities...when you stand nearby and the fact that "it" was created thousands of years ago...and is still preserved! It does not matter in what form, it is PRESERVED and carries a particle of "that time"...It is difficult to find words to describe the sensations that cover you...but it is definitely worth seeing like this, right in front of you!

Yes, they are just statues, not in the best condition. Yes, they bring them to them for 5-7 minutes and go further. But this is part of the ancient heritage of the Egyptian people, and these structures are thousands of years old. And if you are lucky, they will sing you their quiet, drawn-out song.

The stop was for 10-15 minutes. They stand like brothers, like orphans, like guards of Luxor, in the middle of the desert - these Colossi, stand for centuries ... Sellers of all sorts of things pester, they want to sell at least for a dollar, at least something. We take a few photos and on the long way to the hotel.... But if you like to travel, study different things, in different countries - you must see and you must take photos! )

This is the name of the famous statues of Amenophis III. The age of the statues dates back to the 14th century BC. e. During the earthquake in 27 BC. e. the statues partially split and at sunrise they began to make sounds, "talk" Thus, the "Oracle of Memnon" appeared. The necropolis became a place of pilgrimage for Greeks and Romans. And the Roman emperor Septimius Severus even overdid it, trying to achieve the mercy of the gods, he restored the statues and they stopped "talking" Inspection is included in the excursion to Luxor.
