Heliopolis is one of the oldest and most important cities in ancient Egypt, located northeast of modern Cairo. Heliopolis was the main center of worship for the supreme god of the sun (originally Atum, then Atum-Ra) and the cycle of deities associated with it - the "Great Nine Iun".
Ancient Heliopolis was located on the territory of the modern outlying Cairo districts of Al-Mataria and Ain Shams. In Mataria, the obelisk of Senusret I has been preserved, around which a small open-air museum has been organized (near El Massala Square).
