Al Azhar Park is a large-scale landscape gardening project that officially opened in May 2005.
Work on the creation of a city park with a total area of 30 hectares began in 1997 with the arrangement of a vast barren wasteland - a hilly, landfill site, located between the city wall and the Mamluk tomb. As part of this massive debris-cleaning effort, many previously hidden sections of Salah ad-Din's 12th-century wall, including the towers, gates and interior galleries, have been resurfaced and are now in the process of being restored. The former backyards of the old city were thus turned into a beautiful boulevard.
On the territory of the park there are huge reservoirs of the city's water supply system. Special nurseries prepare seedlings and seedlings for the park. 655 thousand of these seedlings were planted in the park. The park features extensive recreational areas where people can meet, relax and have picnics on the lawns, as well as more sophisticated facilities such as a hilltop restaurant or lakeside cafe.
