Mosque of Ibn Tulun
Mosque of Ibn Tulun
Egypt, Cairo
The mosque of Ibn Tulun is possibly the oldest mosque in Fustat, retaining its original appearance dating back to the middle of the 9th century. The mosque was built by the Abbasid governor in Egypt, Ahmed ibn Tulun (868-884), who was virtually independent of the central government. The mosque was built on a small hill called Jabal Yashkur ("Hill of Thanksgiving"). One local legend says that after the Flood Noah's ark stopped here, and not on Mount Ararat.
