The very beautiful red-brick neo-Gothic church of St. Paulus was built in Viljandi in the middle of the 19th century. The population of the town by that time had grown greatly, and the old church of St. Jaan could not fit all the parishioners under its arches. One of the local landowners donated part of his land to the church, and the church of St. Paulus was built on it. Interestingly, the architect of the building - Matthias von Holst - was married to an Englishwoman, and in order to please his wife, he deliberately chose the Tudor style for decorating the church.→
