Lühike yalg pedestrian street

Luhike jalg
Estonia, Tallinn
Lühike jalg (“short leg”) is a pedestrian street in Tallinn's old town, connecting Pikk jalg and Rataskaevu streets. Luhige jalg also overlooks the Danish King's Garden at Vyshgorod. Thus, Luhike yalg connects the upper, knightly-noble part of the city with the lower, merchant part.

According to medieval tradition, on May 15 every year on Tallinn Day, the Prime Minister, whose residence is located in the upper part of the city, should knock on the closed gate of the tower on Lühike Jalg Street and ask to be let into the Lower Town. After that, the mayor, who is on the other side of the gate, unlocks them and, together with the prime minister, goes down to the Lower City to greet the people.

Lü hike-jalg or Short Leg is one of the most picturesque streets of Tallinn. The street is a staircase, climbing it you can get into the Danish King's Garden (if you go straight through the arch) or, turning the gate to the right, go out onto the sister street Pikk-Yalg (Long Leg). Thanks to these two streets, people often joke about Tallinn that it "limps on both legs" : ). In the houses along this street there are several bars and the Matilda confectionery, which is popular among tourists and townspeople.
