forest cemetery

Metsakalmistu, Metsakalmistu
Estonia, Tallinn
The Forest Cemetery or Metsakalmistu is a cemetery in the city of Tallinn, where the largest writers, artists, sculptors, architects and politicians of the republic are buried. It occupies an area of 48.3 hectares.

The Forest Cemetery was founded in 1933 by the city authorities in Kloostrimetsa, and the opening ceremony took place in 1939. This is a natural-looking cemetery, and the requirements for its design imply a ban on the installation of memorials and grave fences. Metsakalmistu can be considered the richest cemetery in Estonia in terms of cultural monuments.

The familiar attitude of Europeans to cemeteries has long been known: either a park will be laid out among the graves, or even a casino will be built among the gravestones. But, either the Estonians have a different mentality, or our common past has left an imprint on the attitude towards burials - the cemeteries here remain cemeteries. To go here, you need to tune in to the appropriate wave, because Metsakalmistu (Forest Cemetery) is still first of all a functioning cemetery, and secondly - a "tourist site".
