Saona is the largest island in the Dominican Republic. The area of the island is 110 square kilometers. It belongs to the province of La Romana and is part of the Este National Park.
The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus on September 14, 1494. Now there are three fishing villages on it. On the territory of the reserve, many caves of the Taino Indians have been preserved. The local flora and fauna are very rich. There are more than five hundred species of plants here, many of which do not grow anywhere else. The fauna of the island is represented by turtles, iguanas and a large number of bird species. The coastal waters are home to 40 species of fish, more than 120 species of shellfish, as well as starfish, manatees and dolphins.
Saonu Island is also called Bounty Island. It was in this piece of paradise that the shooting of the popular advertisement of the bar of the same name took place.
