Viking Ship Museum

Viking Ships Museum, Vikingeskibsmuseet
Denmark, Roskilde
The Viking Ship Museum is located on the banks of the Roskilde Fjord and is dedicated to the history of navigation and shipbuilding in Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages. The Vikings were the best sailors of their time, they built unique ships, which, presumably, reached Iceland, Greenland and North America. In 1956, the remains of ships sunk in the 11th century to protect the harbor from the sea were found at the bottom of the fjord. Due to the low temperature of sea water and a layer of silt, the ships are well preserved. According to the fragments raised over several years, 5 ships of the Viking era were reconstructed, for the storage of which this museum was opened in 1969.

The main exposition of the museum is located in a separate building, where there is a hall with life-size models of ships that you can walk around; a hall with restored Viking ships; hall for thematic exhibitions; a hall with an exposition showing a berth for ships; cinema, gift shop and free luggage storage.
Nearby is the Museum Island, on which there is a shipyard with workshops, where you can see the process of building ships using medieval tools, learn how durable sails are sewn from animal hair, take a woodcarving master class. In the summer season, there is a ride on traditional Scandinavian boats specially built for this purpose at the museum shipyard, capable of accommodating more than 20 people. Cafe Knarr is open on the island. The museum also includes a parking lot, a Snekken restaurant and a small hostel.

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde (Roskilde) is the reason for many people to travel to Denmark. What does the average person know about contemporary Denmark? Yes, almost nothing. A tiny, sleepy kingdom somewhere between Germany and Sweden. Well, firstly, it is not tiny, and secondly, it was not always sleepy. Denmark is the largest European country because, in addition to the Jutland peninsula, it owns the islands of Funen, Bornholm, Zeeland and, most importantly, Greenland. A few centuries ago, the Danes owned England and a significant part of the German lands.
