Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Slot, Elsinore
Denmark, Helsingor
Kronborg Castle, located on the northeastern tip of the island of Zeeland, has long served as an outpost of the Danish kingdom in the Baltic Sea. In this place, the width of the Øresund Strait is only 4 km, so the castle was of great strategic importance. The castle is also known as Elsinore, or Hamlet's castle, as it is the setting of Shakespeare's novel of the same name. November 30, 2000 Kronborg was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. More than 200 thousand tourists visit it every year.

Before the appearance of the present castle, the Krogen Fortress stood in its place. Due to its important strategic position - at the narrowest point of the Ø resund Strait, connecting the Baltic with the North Sea - it was always quite busy here. And all foreign ships entering or leaving the Baltic Sea had to half-mast their flags as they passed by and pay a mandatory toll. But the castle is not famous for this. Kronborg is popularly known as "Elsinore" as the setting for William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet".
