Before the appearance of the present castle, the Krogen Fortress stood in its place. Due to its important strategic position - at the narrowest point of the Ø resund Strait, connecting the Baltic with the North Sea - it was always quite busy here. And all foreign ships entering or leaving the Baltic Sea had to half-mast their flags as they passed by and pay a mandatory toll. But the castle is not famous for this. Kronborg is popularly known as "Elsinore" as the setting for William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet".→
