Mauthalle building

Mauthalle
Germany, Nuremberg
The Mauthalle was built between 1498 and 1502 by the city architect Hans Beheim. The building received its current name in 1572, when the city customs house (Maut - cash collection) was located here. During the Second World War, the building was completely burned out and was restored only in 1953. Mauthalle now houses offices, and in the basement of the building there is a Franconian restaurant called Barfusser.

Initially, this building housed the city customs, which gave the name to the building - "maut" means "cash collection". Then they decided to use the deep basement of Mauthalle to store the city's grain reserves. At the same time, numerous windows in the roof ensured good ventilation of the largest granary.
