executioner's bridge

Henkersteg, Bridge Executioner
Germany, Nuremberg
The executioner's bridge across the river Pegnitz was built in 1457 and connected the city with the island of Trödelmarkt. The wooden bridge was part of a medieval complex, which also included a stone building, a storehouse and a water tower. Until 1806, the city executioners lived in the house, living separately, outside the city. The inhabitants of Nuremberg avoided meeting with the executioners, while the bridge served as their secret passage to the house. Today, the building houses a museum.

The profession of an executioner in the city was not at all respected, no one wanted to settle next to him. They found a way out by building a small house near the river on the outskirts of the old city. So in Nuremberg there was a House of the Executioner and the Executioner's Bridge.
