House of Pilate

Pilatushaus, The Pilate House
Germany, Nuremberg
Pilate's house is located at the beginning of the Am Elberg street on the corner of Tiergärtnertorplatz, not far from the Nuremberg Fortress. The half-timbered building was built in 1489 for the master Grunewald, who was engaged in the manufacture of knightly armor. The building got its name in the 17th century due to the fact that it was from here that the so-called “Way of the Cross of Christ” by the sculptor Adam Kraft to the Johannesfriedhof cemetery began. On the corner of the building there is a figure of a knight in armor, depicting St. George. It currently hosts traveling exhibitions of paintings.

Pilate's house got its name after it became the starting point of the Way of the Cross leading to the city cemetery. And about George the Victorious on the facade, the locals joke that George is depicted with his “wife”, beating the meaning of the word “dragon” in German, which is also interpreted as “witch, hag” : )
