The guardhouse is the central square of Frankfurt am Main, so named because of the building of the main guard, built in 1730. Later, the building housed a police station with prison cells. The building of the guardhouse, which suffered during the brutal bombing of 1944, was rebuilt in 1954. The area was rebuilt in 1967 - during the construction of the metro, in 1978 - during the construction of a suburban train station. In its current form, the square is a ground and underground pedestrian zone with shops and cafes, metro and transport stations. In addition to the baroque building of the Guardhouse, the rest of the buildings are built in a modern style. To the east of the square is the famous
Zeil shopping street.
