The Frankfurt Historical Museum is located in the city center in the 12th-century Saalhof palace complex, consisting of five reconstructed historic buildings, and in a modern pavilion under construction. It is unique in terms of the number and content of exhibits that tell about the history and culture of Frankfurt, including: 290,000 photographs; 3200 paintings; 76,000 drawings, engravings, maps, postcards; weapons of the XIII-XVIII centuries; a collection of 18th century cabinets; musical instruments of the 17th century; a unique collection of children's toys; sculptures, clothes, numismatics.
The pride of the museum is the globe of the Earth, made in 1515 by Johann Schöner, which depicts a new continent discovered in 1492 - America. One of the most popular exhibits is a set of three city models showing downtown Frankfurt in the Middle Ages, after the bombings in 1944 and after the rebuilding in 1954.
