St. Paul's Church
Paulskirche, Haus aller Deutscher, Paulskirche, House of all Germans
Germany, Frankfurt am Main
St. Paul's Church was the main Lutheran church in Frankfurt for 161 years. Here, in 1848-1849, the first German parliament, the Frankfurt National Assembly, met. As a result of the bombing on March 18, 1944, the church burned down. On May 18, 1948, the restored church building was opened under the name "House of all Germans" and is used mainly for social events.
Since 1949, the Paulskirche has hosted the German Booksellers Peace Prize ceremony. The annual Goethe Prize is also presented here, which honors the most prominent cultural figures of the past year.
Inside the "House of all Germans" there is a colorful and majestic panel telling about the history of St. Paul's Church. Under the cathedral there are rooms in which exhibitions for tourists are held. The church tower houses the administrative part of the building and the library of St. Paul's Church, which houses rare and ancient manuscripts. Here live some ministers of the church itself.
