House At Dried Cod

Haus zum Stockfisch
Germany, Erfurt
The Dried Cod House is an original renaissance-style building on Johannesstraße in Erfurt. The facade of the building is decorated with statues and coats of arms. The house is located on the outskirts of the historic city center. The building was originally used as a warehouse for woad, a plant used to create dyes, which was an important source of income for the city. In the 17th century, the new owners turned the building into a fish warehouse, hence its name. Now the building houses the Erfurt City Museum.

The Dried Cod House (Haus zum Stockfisch) was once located on the very outskirts of the city and served as a warehouse for cod. And I must say that dried cod was a popular food of that period. The building acquired its modern look only in the 18th century, after a large-scale reconstruction in the late Renaissance style. Now the Historical Museum is located here. Address: Johannesstrabe 169
