Gendarmenmarkt square
Gendarmenmarkt, Gendarme Market
Germany, Berlin
Gendarmenmarkt Square impresses with its beauty and architectural harmony. During its long history, this square has changed its name many times. Now it is called Gendarmenmarkt due to the fact that once there were barracks and guard posts of the “gendarmes” of the cuirassier regiment, the elite Prussian cavalry, at this place. The architectural ensemble of the square is decorated with the French and German cathedrals along the edges and the Concert Hall in the middle. There is also a small monument to Schiller near the Konzerthaus. The Gendarmenmarkt is now home to many hotels, restaurants and shops.
