Nikolaifirtel quarter
Nikolaiviertel, Nicholas' Quarter, Nikolaiviertel
Germany, Berlin
The Nikolaiviertel is the oldest residential quarter in Berlin. For a long time, starting from the Middle Ages, mainly merchants and artisans lived and worked here. The center of the quarter was the Protestant church of St. Nicholas, from which its name comes. Nikolay's quarter was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. And only in 1987 it was restored due to the anniversary of the celebration of the 750th anniversary of Berlin. During the restoration work, the few surviving buildings were restored, and a number of new houses were built with historicized facades, decorated with ornaments and other decorations in the style that prevailed here even before the destruction. Currently, the Nikolaiviertel quarter houses several museums (Nikolaikirche and Ephraim Palace) and many restaurants, cafes and shops.
