The palace was built in the 1710s by the outstanding Baroque architect Jan Blazei Santini and is one of his best works. Matthias Bernard Brown took part in the sculptural design of the main portal. Figures of two great eagles, who play the role of traditional Atlanteans - a reminder of the first owners of the palace Kolovrat. The eagle was an element of their coat of arms.

The sculptures of Jupiter and Juno above the portal also belong to the works of Brown's studio. They were made around 1750. The mansard roof ends with a segmental pediment with a vase in the Baroque style.

In 1924, the Italian government bought the palace to house its embassy.
