Old New Synagogue

Staronova synagoga, Old-New Synagogue
Czech republic, Prague
The Old New Synagogue is the oldest surviving synagogue in Central Europe, it was built in the 13th century. in the early Gothic style in the Jewish Quarter of Prague. It is easily recognizable by its jagged brick gable. The original name of the building was "New" or "Great Synagogue", but later, after the construction of new synagogues, it began to be called - "Old-New Synagogue". Visitors will be impressed by the harmonious interiors of the synagogue, its medieval vaults, stone benches and majestic candelabra, as well as the ark of the covenant, which stores the sacred Torah scrolls. The legend of the Golem, which, according to legend, was created by the famous Rabbi Leva, is also associated with the Old New Synagogue. Here you can also see a copy of the standard of the Prague Jews. Next to the synagogue in a small park there is a bronze sculpture of Moses from 1905 by sculptor F. Bilek.
Repeatedly surviving fires, floods and pogroms, the Old New Synagogue has survived to this day and still remains the religious center of the Jews of all Prague.

The main synagogue of the Prague Jewish community has a long history. Worship services have been held here for over 700 years. It is the oldest functioning synagogue in Europe. The building is small in size, with a minimum of architectural ornaments. According to legend, it is in the attic of this synagogue that the body of the Golem is kept - a clay giant created by Rabbi Leo to protect the Jews. The stairs to the attic are now dismantled, there are only brackets on the back wall of the synagogue.
