The Old Town Bridge Tower was built by architect Peter Palerge in 1380 and is one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. The construction of the tower is connected with the laying of the Charles Bridge. In addition to its defensive role, the tower was to have a high aesthetic value.
During the Thirty Years 'War, during the Swedes' attempts to break through Charles Bridge, the tower was severely damaged, including sculptures. The eastern part of the tower suffered less. Now you can see sculptures of Emperor Charles IV and King Wenceslas IV, above them is St. Vitus - the patron saint of Charles Bridge. Above the arch of the gate - the coats of arms of the lands that were part of the state of Charles IV. Even higher - the sculptures of St. Sigmund and St. Wojtech, at whose feet lay a lion.
