The triangular square got its name from the charcoal trade, which has been conducted here since the 14th century. Part of the coal was brought, and the other part was produced in furnaces directly on the square. The center of the square is now decorated with a fountain, erected in 1797 at the expense of patron Jacob Wimmer. In the center of the fountain is a sculptural group of works by the famous sculptor Františ ek Xaver Lederer. The sculptures are carved from siliceous gray sandstone. The square pool with a side of about 3 meters has a profiled wall with curved edges and rounded corners. The central column is made in the shape of a palm trunk and wrapped in a garland of flowers and fruits. The top of the fountain is in the shape of a swan, from the beak of which water flows. The original middle sculptural part of the fountain is now in the Lapidarium of the National Museum, and a copy is installed here. The fountain changed its location several times and in 1951 returned to this area.
The square is surrounded by old houses, some of them have arched galleries on the ground floor. Sculptures of a miner and a coal miner on one of the houses are reminiscent of the ancient purpose of the square.
