Pogorzhelec Square

Czech republic, Prague
A small and quiet square in the center of the Czech capital, surrounded by historic baroque buildings. The square appeared in the XIV century on the site of a small suburb, destroyed by a large-scale fire. Hence the name - Pogorzhelec (that is, "the ashes"), which became symbolic: over the next centuries, the area burned to the ground three times. Due to numerous fires, it is not possible to recreate the original architectural appearance of the square. Together with the square, nearby buildings, which were originally built in the Renaissance style, were rebuilt many times and suffered from fire. In the middle of the square there is a monument to the Czech priest and St. John of Nepomuk, moreover, on a place that was used for public executions in the Middle Ages.

The square in Hradč any, whose name means "ashtray". The houses on the square first burned down in 1420, and then the area burned down several more times. The central part of the square is decorated with a monument to St. John of Nepomuk. Ancient palaces and houses with various house signs once belonged to wealthy citizens. The houses on the south side stand close to the wall of the Strahov Monastery. The largest building enclosing the square is a late 19th century barracks with a large clock.
