Monument Prague to his victorious sons

Monument to the Czechoslovak Legionnaires
Czech republic, Prague
The monument is located in the center of Prague, on the Under Emmaus Square (between Palacky Square and the Emmaus Monastery). The monument was inaugurated in 1931. It is dedicated to the Czechoslovak legionnaires who participated in the First World War on the side of the Russian Empire. The author of the project was the Czech sculptor Josef Marzhatka. The central place of the composition is given to a sixteen-meter obelisk surrounded by stone figures of Czechoslovak legionnaires. During the Nazi occupation, the monument was destroyed. Half a century later, in 1998, it was restored by the famous sculptor Ekaterina Amortova, who used drawings that have survived to this day in her work.

The monument "Prague to its victorious sons" by sculptor Josef Marzatka was inaugurated on October 28.1932. The lower part of the 16-meter-high granite obelisk is covered by seven figures of legionnaires and a female figure - an allegory of the city of Prague, which adorns the flag with a linden branch. Although the lands of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, many Czechs and Slovaks fought on the side of the Entente as part of volunteer formations of the armed forces of France, Italy and Russia.
