public house

Obecni dům, Municipal House
Czech republic, Prague
Public House is a building in Prague. Located on Republic Square.

Built on the site of the old royal palace, which served as the residence of Czech kings in the XIV-XV centuries. Construction began in 1905, completed in 1912. After two unsuccessful competitions, the design was given to Oswald Polivka and Antonin Balshanek. Outstanding Czech artists participated in the design. On October 28, 1918, the independence of Czechoslovakia was proclaimed in the Public House.

Currently, the Public House is used mainly as a venue for concerts. Its main hall is named after the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana and is one of the main concert venues of the Prague Spring International Music Festival.

It is the epitome of the arts and crafts of old times. Each piece conveys the mood of that time. One of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

The appearance of the Municipal House is a response to the historical relic of the XIX century, a mixture of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque, but, as a rule, it is seen as an example of the Prague secession. In general, the building is a testament to the excellent quality of arts and crafts and at the same time modernity. The monumental main entrance is decorated with a colored glass mosaic by Karl Spilar "Apotheosis of Prague". On the ledge above it is an inscription, still relevant quote from Svatopluk Cech: "Good luck to you, Prague! Resist the evil of time, as you have withstood all storms "and the coat of arms of the city of Prague.

If you are a fan of architecture, art and modernity, you like things in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright - this is the place for you! I was amazed by the amazing design of the building and its many details. Our tour lasted about an hour. And the ticket purchased at the beginning provided a nice bonus - a discount coupon for buying a drink in a retro American bar. We had lunch at the cafe on the ground floor - very tasty, and the atmosphere there is exceptional. Look at the details...Even the hinges and door handles are great! There is also a souvenir shop where you can find many beautiful Art Nouveau jewelry, glass and ceramic crafts.

The building is beautiful and architecturally interesting. But I couldn't see everything inside. Free entrance - in the foyer to the cash desks. But I liked the restaurant (at the entrance to the left). Come in, sit down at a table with a cup of tea or coffee, and feel like you're in the 19th century.
