New town hall

Czech republic, Prague
The new Prague Town Hall, built in the Art Nouveau style at the beginning of the 20th century, is located in the central part of the city, on Mariana Square. There used to be a Romanesque church on this site. The building is decorated with sculptures and bas-reliefs by prominent Czech masters Stanislav Suchard, Josef Marzhatka and Ladislav Shaloun. The town hall was equipped with two continuous lifts, fashionable at that time. Each of the twelve booths could accommodate up to two people. Only one elevator has survived to this day, serving four floors. The core of the building was a luxurious hall with chandeliers on the ground floor. The building currently serves as an administrative building. In particular, meetings of the city council and some departments are held here.

The Town Hall was built immediately after the founding of the New Town in Prague by Charles IV in 1348. Over all these centuries, it has witnessed many historical events, including the important event of 1419 - the first Prague defenestration, which became the beginning of the Hussite movement. The 70-meter tower offers stunning views of New Mesto and Charles Square, one of the most popular in the capital.

The building was built in 1908-1911 in the Art Nouveau style designed by the famous architect Oswald Polivka. It is decorated with sculptures by Stanislav Suharda, Josef Marzhatka and Ladislav Shaloun. It now houses the mayor's residence, city council and other governing bodies of the Czech capital. On the corners of the building - two large sculptures - Rabbi Leo - the leader of the Jewish community in Prague in the 16th century, and the legendary Iron Knight.
