Of all the gardens of Prague Castle, the Royal Garden has always been the most elegant, well-groomed and tidy. Until 1534, royal vineyards grew on the site of this large park, located on the north side of the castle.
The garden was laid out at the behest of Ferdinand I. The first architect to take part in the creation of a large park complex in the Renaissance style was Giovanni Spatia. All the vineyards were cut down, and seedlings of trees uncharacteristic of the Czech climate were brought into the garden. The park planted thermophilic trees and other exotic plants: citrus, chestnuts, hazelnuts, various grapes and roses, even tulips from Turkey.
