The unique architectural monument belongs to Charles University since 1383, when the son of the university's founder, King Wenceslas IV, bought one of the most tidy Prague palaces at the time for the university dormitory. The central building is the Great Hall, which serves as a meeting room of the Academic Council of the University, as well as for ceremonial ceremonies.
The current appearance of the Carolinum is largely Baroque, similar to the house that was created in 1718 as a result of reconstruction by Francis Maximilian Kanka. The Baroque character is complemented by some Gothic elements that have been preserved or partially rediscovered.
A baroque window from 1687 with the inscription "LEX CIVIUM DUX" (Law governs the people) has been preserved on the side of Zalizna Street above the Baroque portal erected by Kanka.
The arcade and the Gothic bay window (built around 1370) remain from the former Rotlev house - part of the former home chapel of St. Cosmas and Damian - with which only the bay window of the Old Town Hall can be compared in beauty. The chapel is decorated with symbols of Bohemia, Styria, Moravia, Archbishop Jan of Einstein and Joglin Rotlev.
