Jerusalem Synagogue

Jerusalem Synagogue, Jubilee Synagogue
Czech republic, Prague
The Jerusalem synagogue was built in 1906 and was originally named in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The facade of the building is decorated with bright ornaments, a huge stained-glass window in the shape of a Star of David rises above the main entrance. The interior of the synagogue is dominated by blue and golden shades, the room is designed for 850 seats. The walls are painted with complex ornaments; numerous six-pointed and small stars are used in the decor. The synagogue is located in the center of Prague, not far from the main railway station.

The synagogue received its first name "Jubilee" in honor of the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Emperor Franz Joseph I. But the more common name is "Jerusalem" - according to the name of the street on which it stands. The building was built in 1906 by Viennese architect Wilhelm Schasny, author of many synagogue designs in Austria-Hungary. The style of the building can be described as eclectic - here you can highlight the features of Art Nouveau and Moorish style. The facade is decorated with a massive arch with a rosette window with the Star of David and the Hebrew inscription "This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous enter.

This synagogue is one of the most beautiful in Prague. It can only compete with the Spanish synagogue. Colorful interior facade, marble columns, and a huge stained glass window with a Star of David. We were lucky to get there for an organ concert, which is held once a month. In addition, during the tour on the top floor of the synagogue, we learned a lot of interesting things from the history of the Prague Jews.
