Cranner Fountain

Czech republic, Prague
The height of the fountain is twenty-two meters, and it is the highest fountain in the Czech Republic. It is located in Prague, in a park area, which is adjacent to the Bedrich Smetana embankment. The construction of a fountain of such impressive size started in 1845 and continued for five years. The Neo-Gothic project was designed by the famous German architect Josef Kranner, and the sculptors Josef Kamil Böhm and Josef Max brought his idea to life. The central part of the composition is dedicated to the last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Francis II, depicted on horseback. In 1918, the authorities of the newly formed Czechoslovakia decided to dismantle the statue glorifying the powerful Habsburg dynasty - it was moved to the city museum, where it was kept for 85 years, until in 2003 the statue of the monarch was returned to its original place, thereby restoring the architectural ensemble.
