The Church and Monastery of the Virgin Mary of the Snows is one of the largest medieval buildings in Prague's New Town. By founding the church and monastery, the Czech king (and later the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) Charles IV wanted to emphasize the proximity of this building to Rome. This is evidenced by the name of the complex, which connects it with the famous Roman basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Santa Maria Maggiore).
