Břevnov Monastery is the first Benedictine monastery founded in Prague in the 10th century. at the request of Bishop Vojtěch of Prague and Prince Bolesław II. Initially, it was wooden, but already in the XI century. a stone Romanesque basilica of St. Margaret (Markets). During its nearly thousand years of history, the monastery has suffered from fires, wars and political situations. The current wealth and delightful baroque appearance of the Břevnov Monastery owe to the grandiose reconstruction and reconstruction carried out in the 18th century. The basilica and other monastery buildings were built according to the design of the father and son Dientzenhofer, and the decoration was carried out by the most famous masters of the time, which is reflected in the splendor of the artistic paintings of the ceilings and altars.
The vast complex of the monastery includes: the Basilica of St. margaritas; a three-storey convent complex with outbuildings and a prelature building; chapel of st. Joseph, a terraced monastery garden with a summer house and a well, nicknamed "Voyteshka"; the Břevnovský Benedict brewery and the Břevnov cemetery.
Those wishing to take a tour of the monastery can see the Baroque Basilica of St. Marketa (Margaret), the Romanesque crypt of the 11th century, the Baroque abbey prelature with the Teresian Hall, and also take a walk in the extensive monastery garden.
The Břevnov Benedictine Monastery remains active, so you can visit it only on weekends.
