Church of All Saints

Ossuary in Sedlec
Czech republic, Kutna Hora
A small Gothic church of All Saints is located in Sedlec, a northwestern suburb of the city of Kutna Hora. The church-chapel was built in 1400 on the ancient cemetery of the Cistercian (Bernardine) abbey, where the holy earth brought from Golgotha was scattered. In the underground part of the church there is a traditional ossuary in the Middle Ages with the remains of people who died during the plague and the Hussite wars. The uniqueness of the bone in Sedlec is that human remains were used to create the main part of the interior in the 16th century and during the reconstruction of the church at the end of the 19th century.

The iconostasis, arches and garlands, vault and ceiling decoration are made of processed human bones and skulls. On one of the walls you can see the coat of arms of the Schwarzenberg family, which owned the chapel since 1784, carved from bones by carver Frantisek Rinta. The main attraction is a huge chandelier made from all kinds of human skeletal bones and fixed to the ceiling with jaws. The Church of All Saints is open to visitors all year round, with the exception of Christmas.

The church is not large, just one room. Tickets are sold in it, or not far down the street towards the Church of the Ascension of the Mother of God there is an information center where it is possible to pay by card (so we did). The ossuary is under restoration and, judging by the reviews on the Internet, for a long time, but it works. Inside you will see many skulls, bones and even a chandelier of bones. It took more than 40 thousand human skeletons to create such an interior. There is an active cemetery on the territory of the church.
