Loket Castle
Loket Castle, Hrad Loket
Czech republic, Karlovy Vary
Loket is a stone castle near the city of Karlovy Vary. It got its name from the word "elbow". It is the shape of the curved hand that resembles the bend of the Ohře River, on the banks of which Loket stands. According to one version, the castle was built as a border fortress.
The castle was first mentioned in written sources in 1234. The question of which of the rulers of the Czech Republic founded the fortress is still debatable. Since 1968 it has been a national monument and is open to the public as a museum.
