Church of St. Mary Magdalene
Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Kostel svaté Máří Magdaleny
Czech republic, Karlovy Vary
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most famous monuments of high Czech baroque architecture, located on Svoboda Square, in the very center of the city. It was built in 1738 on the site of a modest Gothic church.
The temple was built according to the project of the famous architect Dienzenhofer. The interior is decorated with two Gothic Madonnas, Baroque altar plastic by Eberl, the main church altar image of St. Mary Magdalene by E. Dollhopf and other baroque decorative elements. Under the church there are spacious crypts. During a big fire in the city in 1759, the temple was badly damaged and two of its towers burned to the ground. The final reconstruction with the restoration of the domes took place in 1861.
