The wooden building of the city theater was built in 1717 near the Grandhotel Pupp, in 1787 the building suddenly collapsed during a performance. Financing for the construction of the new building was carried out with funds from the sale of salt from the Vrzhidlo healing spring. Also, Dr. David Becher, who is the founder of modern treatment at the spa, provided great financial assistance.
The theater was reconstructed in 1884-1886. designed by the famous architects Gelmer and Fellner, and is still preserved in the same form. The first performance at the opening of the theater on March 15, 1886 was the opera by V.-A. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. In the theater there is a valuable curtain by Gustav Klimt depicting "The Apotheosis of the Art of Poetry". A large reconstruction was carried out in the theater in 1993-1999. At the same time, the features of the original architectural project were preserved. The city theater is the real pride of Karlovy Vary.
