Byzantine Museum of Paphos
Byzantine Museum
Cyprus, Paphos
An unusually interesting Byzantine Museum is located in the vicinity of the Bishopric of Paphos. Here is a large collection of Byzantine icons, mainly from the 12th - 19th centuries, collected from churches and monasteries in the Paphos region. These icons reflect the religiosity of the inhabitants of Paphos in the Byzantine era, and present the high artistic performance of those times to modern visitors. The oldest icon - the icon of the Mother of God Eleusa (the Merciful) from the church of the monastery of St. Sava of Karon - dates back to about 1200 AD.
The museum also exhibits liturgical books, decrees, manuscripts, wood carvings, crosses, silverware, priestly robes, etc.
