Sanctuary of Aphrodite
Sanctuary of Aphrodite, Temple of Aphrodite
Cyprus, Paphos
This is the most significant of all the sanctuaries of the goddess of love that existed in the ancient world (XII century BC), a reminder of which is still in Homer.
This temple was the place of worship of the Goddess of Love as far back as 3800 BC and was considered the most significant sanctuary of Aphrodite in the ancient world. Pilgrims from Greece and Egypt came to this temple. Such congresses were held with the onset of spring, which means with the awakening of everything living and new.
This holiday event was called Aphrodisia. Basically, it all came down to an orgy between the audience, so the temple is also called the Temple of a Hundred Rooms, since numerous rooms served for indulgence in carnal pleasures for the sake of worshiping the Goddess of Love - Aphrodite. But with the adoption of Christianity, this tradition ceased.
After the end of the pilgrimage, the temple gradually became empty, the magnificent garden surrounding it was cut down, and many stones were dismantled for the construction of buildings that were more necessary at that time. And the ruins of the once sanctuary and an exhibition with the finds of archaeologists have already reached our time.
