Paphos Castle
Cyprus, Paphos
Paphos Castle is a castle on the edge of the harbor in Paphos. It was originally a Byzantine fort to protect the harbor. In 1222 it was destroyed by an earthquake, but soon rebuilt by the Lusignans. In 1570 it was dismantled by the Venetians. After the capture of the island by the Turks, the fort was restored and fortified. During its existence, it served as a fortress, a prison and even a salt warehouse during the British occupation of the island. In recent years, the castle has been the site of an annual festival held in September. In 1935, the castle was declared one of the main attractions of Paphos.
