Monastery of Panagia Chrysoroyatissa
Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery, Panaya Chrysorogiatissa
Cyprus, Paphos
The monastery of Chrysoroyatissa was founded in 1152 by the hermit Ignatios, who found the icon of the Mother of God and, by command from above, began building a church for this icon next to the cave where he lived. Later a monastery was formed around the church. None of the original buildings have survived; the current ones date back to the end of the 18th century. The icon discovered by Ignatios, which is believed to have been painted by the Apostle Luke, is placed in a silver frame and kept in the monastery.
The monastery is famous for its wines. The wonderful climate of these places allows growing good grapes, drinks from which can be tasted right in the monastery cellars. The wine you like, as well as honey, can be bought in the monastery shop.
