The ancient city of Nea Paphos, which is currently being excavated, is of great cultural value (listed by UNESCO). Particularly interesting are the houses of wealthy Romans with mosaic floors - these are the best Roman mosaics on the island. It is assumed that they were made by masters from Alexandria: according to their sketches, elegant colorful paintings were made from thousands of small stones of different colors.
The houses were named according to the plots of mosaics (mythological and everyday): the house of Dionysus (there is one of the most ancient mosaics of the island, depicting Scylla - half a woman, half a fish, half a dog), the house of Aeon (there you can see the beautiful Leda, the swan princess), the house of Theseus (where the image of the battle between Theseus and the Minotaur is located), the house of Orpheus.
The Villa of Dionysus is the largest of all and contains the most impressive mosaics. In the far corner is an image of Ganymede and an eagle. Inside the building, you can see panels with hunting scenes. And finally, the most valuable mosaic of the villa is a series of scenes with Dionysus, including the first ever depiction of a hangover.
Not far away, in another part of the archaeological site, is the House of Aeon, a tiny building discovered in 1983. It has one large mosaic panel with five scenes. In the upper left corner are Leda and a swan (Zeus, who took the form of a swan). At the top right, we see young nymphs with the infant Dionysus. In the middle part of the panel, sea nymphs are depicted - something like a beauty contest, in which Eon acts as a judge. In the lower row, Dionysus reappears at the head of the festive procession, and in the last scene, Apollo (the god of music) is depicted punishing the musician who lost in the competition.
In the Villa of Orpheus, among other mosaic panels, there is an image of Orpheus surrounded by animals listening to his music. The Villa Theseus, consisting of two buildings, is at the far end of the site, and its mosaic panels are the least preserved. The most impressive mosaic is located in the south wing of the villa, depicting Theseus himself. The fifth building with mosaics (Villa of the Four Seasons) was discovered in 1992 and is still being excavated.
