Church of Saint Paraskeva
Agia Paraskevi Church
Cyprus, Paphos
The name of the village of Geroskipou, which has practically turned into an eastern suburb of Paphos, translates as "Holy Garden". In ancient times, there really was a fragrant garden, through which pilgrims went to the sanctuary of Aphrodite.
In the 10th century the multi-domed church of St. Paraskeva was erected in Geroskipa (the martyr Paraskeva was killed in 161, when the first Christians were persecuted). In addition to unusual architecture, the church is famous for its frescoes, the oldest of which date back to the 8th century. The frescoes have been applied one on top of the other for centuries, and today restorers find earlier works under frescoes made in both the 12th and 15th centuries.
