Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe
Archaeological Museum of Polis Marion/Arsinoe, Marion - Arsinoe Archaeological Museum
Cyprus, Paphos
The doors of the local museum of Marion-Arsinoe in Polis were opened to the public in 1998. It was built by the Government of Cyprus with the generous financial support of Mr. Nikos Shakolas. The exhibits in the first room, which is named after Mr. Nikos Shakolas, were found in the vast area around Polis and are arranged in chronological order, thus reflecting the historical development of the city from the Neolithic and Copper Stone Ages to the Middle Ages.
In the second hall there are exhibits from the necropolises of the region with special references to the location and excavations of the above cemeteries. According to the sources of ancient literature, recorded by Stefanos Byzantios (Byzantine), the city of Marion was founded by the legendary king Mary. Today, evidence has been found that the city was inhabited already at the end of the Neolithic era and throughout the entire Copper Stone Age. The heyday of the city came in the Cypro-Archaic period, and in the Cypro-Classic period the city became one of the most important ancient Cypriot city-kingdoms of the island with important trade links with the eastern islands of the Aegean, Attica and Corinth.
