Limassol Castle is located next to the old port at the end of the waterfront. It was built at the end of the 13th century on the then existing defensive structure in the form of a fortress, in which in 1191 King Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre, who became Queen of England, were married. Part of the castle was destroyed in 1525, and after the Turkish conquest of the island in 1570, it again became a defensive fortress, which later served as a prison and a military archive.
In recent years, significant restoration work has taken place in the castle, and in 1986 the Medieval Museum was opened in the Great Hall. The museum's collection is the exhibits of the Nicosia Museum, whose building in 1974 was in the buffer zone separating Greeks and Turks.
