Limassol District Archaeological Museum, Limassol District Archaeological Museum
Cyprus, Limassol
Next to the city gardens is the Archaeological Museum of Limassol. The exposition of the museum includes interesting ancient finds discovered in the vicinity of Limassol from the Neolithic period to the Roman Empire. In the park you can see a sundial that once belonged to Lord Kitchener.
Since 1951, the Archaeological Museum has been located in the Limassol Castle, and in 1975 moved to the current building. The museum consists of three vast halls, corridors and an atrium.
The first room presents archaeological rarities found in the oldest inhabited caves in the Akrotiri region in the southern part of Limassol. The second room displays jewelry dating back to 1700 BC, Roman coins and even ancient razors. The third hall displays the most valuable finds, including the statue of the Egyptian god Bes and the statue of Artemis found in Amathus. The surviving fragments of statues of other deities are also exhibited here.
