Mosque Hala Sultan Tekke
Hala Sultan Tekke, Mosque of Umm Haram
Cyprus, Larnaca
The Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque is one of the few Muslim shrines erected in honor of a woman.
The architectural complex of Hala Sultan Tekke, erected on the site of the death of the Prophet Muhammad's aunt Umm Haram, includes the mosque itself, a mausoleum, a minaret and residential buildings (women's and men's) for employees and pilgrims of the former dervish monastery. The Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque is considered the fourth holiest site in the Muslim world after Mecca, the tomb of Muhammad in Medina and the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and is the main shrine of the Muslims of Cyprus.
The complex was built by the sultans of the Ottoman Empire during the XVIII-XIX centuries: the mausoleum was erected over the burial place of Umm Haram in 1760, and in 1816 an octagonal mosque with a minaret and related buildings was built, as well as a magnificent garden with fountains. The mosque was restored in 1959.
